ELEANOR LEWIS GRASTY
ELEANOR LEWIS GRASTY is a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Personal Savior at the age of eleven; and was baptized at Second Baptist Church, Northeast Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
She is the wife of Rev. Dr. Kenneth Jefferson Grasty, Pastor of Zion Grove Baptist Church, Woodford, Virginia.
Eleanor received her primary and secondary education in the Philadelphia Public School System. A retired educator, she earned the Bachelor of Science in Education Degree from West Chester State Teachers College, West Chester, Pennsylvania (Now West Chester University). First Lady became employed as an Elementary school teacher in the Philadelphia Public School System. She took advantage of the numerous in-service courses available which prepared her to participate in many educational endeavors. During her tenure, she served in the following capacities: as a Teacher in second, third, and fourth grades, respectively; Language Arts supervisor; In-service instructor in The Teaching of Reading in the summer school program at Temple University; Supervisor in the Philadelphia Educational Improvement Program. Always passionate about writing skills, First Lady was one of three preparers to assemble, in booklet format, a collection of essays, Bridging the Gap written by students in her district. Her post -graduate study at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was in Educational Psychology.
Eleanor took advantage of Early Retirement to travel abroad with her husband during his commission as a Foreign Service Officer in the Diplomatic Corps with the US Department of State.
This provided many employment, cultural and educational opportunities for the First Lady: taught at an American School abroad; tutored children of US foreign service families; became a member of Damas Diplomaticas, which consisted of a group of women from many embassies; studied Spanish at the Foreign Service Institute in Washington, DC; sworn in as a member of the Foreign Service as a secretary. During her employment as a foreign service secretary, Eleanor prepared a comprehensive File Management List for secretaries assigned to the European Affairs Division at the Department of State.
The Grasty family has resided in the Philippines, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Guatemala; and visited Hong Kong, Singapore, El Salvador, and Belize.
Upon Dr. Grasty’s retirement from the State Department, the couple settled in Bumpass, VA and became members of Mount Hope Baptist Church, where First Lady is a deaconess. Her fluency in the Spanish Language qualified her to serve as a Spanish Language instructor to many of the seminary students of the Virginia University of Lynchburg satellite at Mt. Hope.
Never one to be idle, she successfully completed the necessary courses for certification as a travel agent. Her home business, PAVA TRAVEL was established in 2007. You may visit her website www.pavatravel.com .
In 2012, Dr. Grasty and First Lady toured the Holy Land. Following the Way of the Cross, walked by Our Lord on the way to His Crucifixtion was an experience like no other. They also visited the ancient cities of Bethlehem and Nazareth. First Lady rode a camel!
Pastor and First Lady are the parents of three and the grandmother of six. She is affectionally called “Ladybug” by some of the ZG members.
She is a member of the Henrico County Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
